It’s now 7 weeks until Christmas, and we just can’t believe where the time has gone! Fortunately it’s still a little early to be thinking about Christmas presents and stockings however, is there something you’ve forgotten to do?
Yes, that’s right. That spare bedroom still isn’t finished is it? You made a promise to yourself, and all of those family members sleeping on the sofa next to the Christmas tree, that they’ll have a nice comfortable bed to sleep on next year. Well, ‘next year’, is here and it’s still not completed!
So how do we do it? It is an awkward time of year to consider decorating, everyone doesn’t have any money and you can’t be dealing with the worry that it won’t be done in time. Well, here are a few simple tips to getting that spare room ready for the festivities!
First all, clear out the bedrooms! Start in the master bedroom; you’ve probably piled up old boxes, chairs and bags of clothes but just clear it all out! This is a great opportunity to get rid of everything you don’t want, use or need anymore. Now it’s time to clear out the kids bedroom. When Christmas finally arrives, the children will have even more toys than usual, so maybe it’s time to treat them to a new bed with extra storage. Stompa have many fun designs with storage space underneath; you can find more information online. If you’re feeling flashy, and a little jealous of the kids new bed, treat yourself too!
So once you’ve ordered your brand new bed, let’s start with your blank canvas. What colour are the walls? If you haven’t decorated the spare room in the past, chances are it’s still has the same nasty yellow or blue that the previous owners painted it. Always go for a neutral colour, a soft beige would be ideal for the spare room.
If you’ve got carpet, take the time to give it a really deep clean. This won’t take very long and it will leave your spare room looking instantly more fresh. If you’ve got wooden flooring, well, this is easy! Just mop the entire floor and perhaps add a block coloured rug? Either a deep red or brown, both of these are warm colours that will make the room feel a little more homely.
In regards to the bed spread, it’s also best to keep with the plainer look. Remember, you’re probably not going to spend a night in the spare room, so think about what visitors you’ll be having. You could just go with a block coloured duvet cover and pillows, or something with a gentle pattern? If you go for a more simple look, it will automatically look more clean and welcoming to your guests.
Now add in a few accessories. Don’t fill the room with photographs or things you simply can’t find a place for in the rest of the house. Put a nice lamp on the bedside table, a bunch of flowers on the windowsill and a few candles on the chest of drawers? You should add a clock to the walls and perhaps a few simple canvas’.
All of this will not cost much, the most expensive thing will probably be the bed. But, if you have scoured the internet you will have definitely found some great deals, especially as we’re on the run up to Christmas.
I reckon you should put a weekend aside to get your spare room ready, or if you have a little help, you could have it all done in just one day!
