Is your homes exterior lacking in something? Do you think your home exterior could do with a bit of a spruce up? If so, we’ve got just the advice for you! There are a variety of things you can do that will effectively give the outside of your home a new lease of life, read our 6 tips to find out how to do it:
Brickwork and Render
If the mortar between your brickwork needs replacing, you shouldn’t attempt it yourself unless it’s a very small part. If more than 3 quarters of your wall has decayed mortar, then you should leave it to the professionals as you’ll need the whole wall raking out.
Old brickwork will have lime mortar which withstands slight movement without cracking, while new cement mortar can crack.
If the building has a coating of render, this can be replaced, re painted or freshly covered over.
To improve the overall outside appearance of your home, you could consider cladding it in horizontal cedar boards – this method has recently become very popular. This technique is good for giving a boring house some style and also good for homes that have mismatched extensions.
There are things you should think about before cladding your house, such as the effect it will have on your house’s value and it’s resale appeal. Is your house in a street full of pretty much identical houses? Cladding may bring the value down!
We know, not everybody enjoys painting; especially when it’s on the outside of the home. Some exteriors should be painted on a regular basis; others won’t need it doing at all. If your house already has a coat of paint on the exterior, take a closer look and see if it could do with a fresh coat.
Windows help to give a house it’s identity, so it’s important you choose the right style to suit your exterior. If you’ve got an old property, you might want to consider sash windows or casement windows to give back that old house charm. You can find plenty of different styles to suit your home, as well as a variety of materials.
Choose A New Front Door
You could choose a traditional style door, and jazz it up a bit with your door “furniture”, for example, your door knob, letterbox, house number, etc. If you’ve got a bit more money to spend, you could even pay to have a stained glass door!
Accessories outside the home can really make a difference. You might choose to fit some solar lights around your garden, or maybe fit some special fairy lights in a tree/bush to give your garden an enchanted effect.
There are many outdoor statues you can purchase to suit every budget, from little meerkats to mini water fountains. You could even choose to have a pond or a big water feature!
Plants make a big difference and help your home look more lively and colourful. Wooden furniture and accessories look great, consider carved house name signs to give your home a period property feel, or even a wooden swinging bench.
We hope you have fun with your homes exterior using our tips!
